Lot Details

Covered in faux pearls, this work by Arch Connelly is a fantastic example of the artist's use of unusual materials and unique style that is at once playful and ironic.

Arch Connelly (b. 1950) was a prominent sculptor in the early 80s East Village art scene. He studied ceramics at Southern Illinois University, obtaining his BA in 1973. Connelly is best known for his choice of flashy, gaudy materials such as costume jewelry, glitter, and sequins, which he uses as stand-ins for natural forms and phenomena. His work is often ironic, questioning normative gender roles as well as monetary value of art. He died of AIDS in 1993, at the age of 43. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Fun Gallery, New York, NY; Tracey Garet-Michael Kohn, New York NY; Charles Cowles Gallery, New York, NY; Holly Solomon Gallery, New York, NY; Galleria Murnik, Milan, Italy, and 56 Bleeker Gallery, New York, NY.
