Lot Details

Lithograph on calendered Rives BFK paper with torn and deckle edges, measures 11.78 x 13.68 inches.

Executed in 1969, ushering in Ed Ruscha's decade-long focus on printmaking, "Boiling Blood, Fly" features two clusters of delicate bubbles towards to the upper left and a small fly in the lower right-hand corner. Here, Ruscha echoes the key principles of Pop Art by employing a common object as his subject matter. With the viscosity and temperature of boiling blood rendered through a subtle gradation of vibrant orange tones, this print reflects both his interest in Surrealism and demonstrates the harmonious, intriguing compositions for which the artist is known.
