Lot Details

Created the same year the artist died, Andy Warhol’s "Red Lenin" is part of his last great series. Based on a photograph of Lenin by Philip Schönborn, Warhol chooses to emphasize the most recognizable characteristics of the former Soviet leader with a strong blue outline around the shape of his stoic visage, likening Lenin in status to his previous images of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and Elizabeth Taylor. Although Warhol had also formerly approached the political area with his various political portraits, "Red Lenin", with its vivid red background, engages fully with the concerns of Communism in the larger global consciousness.
