Lot Details

Certificate of Provenance provided.

Polaroid measures 4.25 x 3.38 inches (10.8 x 8.6 cm), and is framed to museum standards in a handmade frame with dimensions of 11.44 x 10.3 inches (29.1 x 26.2 cm).

Depicting his painting of Mount Vesuvius, this unique Polaroid by Andy Warhol is one of the few that was initialed by the artist.

The photographic medium was critical to Warhol’s artistic production. He appropriated newspaper images, advertising, film stills, and celebrity portraits to create his silkscreened paintings and prints, while he was also a filmmaker and photographer in his own right. He created extensive bodies of work with the photobooth portrait and the polaroid. The camera was constantly at hand, mediating between himself and the world, and the archive of images he produced in an endless stream served as a visual diary and source book.
