Lot Details

Though not as well known as his infamous Campbell’s Soup Cans or silk-screened celebrity paintings, Andy Warhol’s Polaroids often served as visual aids for later works, but are significant in and unto themselves. Taken from Warhol’s favorite camera, the Polaroid Big Shot, the artist captured the images of notorious celebrities of the era in this seminal body of work dating from 1970 to 1986. Subjects include such infamous stars as Sylvester Stalone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Farrah Fawcett, Truman Capote, Dennis Hopper, and Bianca Jagger, among numerous others.

Andy Warhol (1928-1994) defined a decade and a culture with his groundbreaking Pop Art. He is considered by many to be the most influential American artist of the second half of the 20th century. Initially a popular Manhattan commercial artist, Warhol achieved fame with his multiple images of soup cans, soda bottles, dollar bills and celebrities, which revealed the beauty within mass culture.
