Lot Details

This “Alexander the Great” print is a UNIQUE screenprint. Warhol experimented with different color combinations and this gold and red impression is one of the most beautiful - equating Alexander with the mythical god of the sun, Apollo.

Warhol published the edition "Alexander the Great" in cooperation with the Hellenic Heritage Foundation to coincide with “The Search for Alexander” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition ran from October 27, 1982-January 3, 1983. During the early 80’s Warhol created his first prints that were inspired Masterpieces from art history. The “Alexander the Great” prints were the only works he made based on classical art. They were also the only works he made based on a sculptural source, not a painting. The sculpture from which Warhol took his inspiration was in a private collection in Geneva, Switzerland.
