2. 'Untitled' (2007), 20 x 16 inches

This pair of lush, phantasmagorical oil paintings-- the portrait of a wistful monster on the one hand, and a vision of grotesque sea creatures on the other-- are paradigmatic of the artist's expressive, highly idiosyncratic brand of contemporary surrealism. They evince the fluorescent colors, hallucinatory subject matter, and high finish that make Ethier's work instantly recognizable.

Toronto-based painter André Ethier (b. 1977), who is also an accomplished rock musician, riffs on mythology and folklore in executing his vibrant, psychedelic works. Monsters, demons, trolls, and severely distorted landscapes figure frequently in Ethier's work. These spectral visions are tempered by the artist's characteristic whimsy-- his monsters can sulk and smoke cigarettes, and flowers can sprout from grotesque lumps or leather boot. Ethier's high/low painting practice quotes artists ranging from R. Crumb to Odilon Redon; his greatest debt, however, may be to Van Gogh, whose expressive brushwork and vivid use of color are everywhere visible in Ethier's oeuvre. Ethier works in a spontaneous manner that relies on the use of quick-drying medium. He has said, "Those paintings are starting to dry by the time I'm finished painting, so it's a race against time. It keeps me from dwelling... and that makes me rely on my subconscious."

Ethier's work has been widely exhibited in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Shanghai, Geneva, Montreal, and Berlin.
