Lot Details

"Like Her We Were Once 16" (2004) is a stunning oil portrait on panel of a young woman, dressed in military green balanced by her colorful patterned head scarf, that frames her beautiful face, as she gazes unflinchingly outwards with large dark brown eyes standing against a white-washed wall. A subtle and surreal detail is the bright red lollipop that she holds in her hand, as if a peace token or a red rose, underscoring her naiveté and the wish to return to the carefree days of childhood. This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

This work is one of the most dynamic portraits by emerging Iranian artist, Amir Rad (Tehran, b. 1976) from his iconic and internationally exhibited "Like Her We Were Once 16" series of over thirty oil paintings painted over the course of several years. Each painting in the Series share near identical composition and theme, depicting one female figure against a white wall, typically in similar dress and demeanor, all share nearly identical stylized facial features and each woman holds surreal yet poignant something out in their hands--an empty coffee cup, a half-smoked cigarette, a pair of men's shoes, and origami bird, objects that are harmless and speak to the brevity of life and to loss. This Series is important as these young women and the objects they hold all act as metaphor for Rad, and are a vehicle to address his feelings of innocence lost, both as an individual living in Iran with its current sociopolitical position in the world and stringent Islamic regulations placed on individuals in the country at present, as well as for the country itself.

The artist was born in Tehran, Iran in 1976. He holds a in B.A in Painting from Azad University of Art, Iran and in 2010 he received an M.A. in Painting from Honar (Art) University, Iran. He is represented by the prestigious East Gallery, Tehran, Iran and is exhibited by Asar Gallery and Aria Gallery, Florence, Italy. His work has been exhibited in the US, the U.K., Europe and The Middle East including the a show banned by the Iranian Government in 2009 at Asar Art Gallery, ”Border”, (Tunnel group), Tehran and in 2008: "heaven on earth", Bricklane Gallery, London, England; in 2007 a solo presentation at London Art Fair, “Broken Promises, Forbidden Dreams” London, U.K. and also in 2007 his work was part of the seminal travelling exhibition : "TRANSFORM/NATION: CONTEMPORARY ART OF IRAN AND ITS DIASPORA" - ELLIPSE ARTS CENTER, Fairfax, VA and Tehran, Iran.
