Lot Details

Sheet size 31 x 22 inches (78.7 x 55.9 cm). Though Amanda Means is a known master black and white printer, having produced prints for superstar clients such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Roni Horn, the artist’s own work is often a product of camera-less processes. Means often works with everyday objects, such as the light bulb seen in this image, bringing them into the darkroom where she places them under the enlarger and reproduces their intricate details onto light-sensitive paper. By doing so, Means is able to capture the precise lines and geometries of these objects with stunning results. It is in studies such as Light Bulb (14232LB) that Means explores the often overlooked duality between the natural and the manmade, demonstrating nature’s mysterious effects on even a small, mass-produced light bulb.
