Lot Details

Allen Jones was born in Southampton in 1937 and studied art at Hornsey College of Art, London from 1955-1959, and later at the Royal College of Art from 1959-1960.
During his time at the Royal College in the early 1960s Allen Jones was one of a group of students which included Derek Boshier, David Hockney, R. B. Kitaj, Peter Blake and Peter Phillips, who radically changed the face of British art with their precocious, unconventional and irreverent work which was based in popular culture, embracing new subject-matter and new materials. Out of their combined work emerged the British Pop Art movement and Jones was to become one of the most instantly recognisable members of this movement.

Allen Jones's preference was for glamour and style, and his aesthetic centred on beautiful women visualised erotically and stereotypically as in glossy magazines, advertisements and cartoon strips. Underpinned with a great mastery of colour and a consummate painting technique, Jones is a highly prolific artist who has worked in all media - painting, print making and sculpture.

The small study which is being offered for sale at Artnet Auctions is a delightful gouache study for a major sculptural commission Jones received in 1981 from Weisman Foundation. The work shows the artist exploring the eventual composition of the sculpture. Although the drawing is small in scale the artist has managed to successfully convey a sense of movement and sensuality.
