Lot Details

Inspired by erotic depictions of women in the media, Allen Jones developed his trademark style that explored eroticism and fantasy through stylized representations of the female form. He is best known for his sculptures which are often erotic transformations of women into items of “human furniture.” Much of his work references the imagery of rubber fetishism and BDSM (bondage and discipline/submission and sadism). Stanley Kubrik asked Jones to design the set for his classic film A Clockwork Orange for no payment. Jones refused but made a series of sculptures based on the film.

British artist Allen Jones (b. 1937) studied at the Royal Academy of Art in London and is associated with the birth of British Pop Art. During the 1960s, he became aware of the furor created by women's bodies and their identities. He recalls: "I was living in Chelsea and I had an interest in the female figure and the sexual charge that comes from it. Every Saturday on the King's Road you went out and skirts were shorter, the body was being displayed in some new way. And you knew that the following week somebody would up the ante."
While living in New York, he discovered a rich cache of sexual imagery in popular illustrations of the 1940s and 1950s. Eroticism became a trademark of his art, in which the female figure is playfully stylized. He currently lives and works in London.
