D’Arcangelo is known for his highway imagery that marked Pop’s connection to the American landscape. In this simple composition a white, tree-lined stretch of road surrounded by only blue sky disappears into the deep horizon. A triangular warning sign that has been turned upside down and split down the middle floats above, creating a surreal composition on a flat plane. The endless concrete ribbons that forge through the artist’s work and country replace the sublime American landscape with a culture of highways and road signs. The present work has remained in the same private collection since being acquired directly from the Franklin Siden Gallery in Detroit.
