“Fortuna e Sfortuna” (1994) by celebrated Italian artist, Alighiero Boetti (Italian, 1940-1994) is a late example of the artist’s series of arrazi (tapestries) commonly referred to as word squares. This embroidered grid of 16 blocks reads from top to bottom “Fortuna e Sfortuna” in a mosaic of bright contrasting color. Boetti made a large body of these linguistic works between 1971-1994, sourcing skilled craftswomen from Afghanistan to create the embroideries based on the artist’s specifications.
