Alfonso Ossorio (1916-1990) was born in Manila, Philippines and moved to the U.S. at age fourteen. After studying fine art at Harvard University and Rhode Island School of Design, he began developing his own personal style, which evolved from a Surrealist-influenced approach to more daring experimental techniques inspired by the Abstract Expressionists. As he spent more time in the U.S., (Ossorio became an American citizen in 1933), his work increasingly showed the influence of American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Jackson Pollock. Ossorio worked in a variety of media, from paintings of enamel and oil, to assemblages made of found objects, to prints. Today, Ossorio’s work can be found in numerous prestigious collections including the Harvard Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., among many others.
