Lot Details

“Three Figures and a Sun” (1953) by Alexander Calder depicts Pablo Picasso with two women. It was in this year that Francois Gilot left Picasso and he began his relationship with Jacqueline, which may have been behind the decision to show Picasso flanked by two women. This gouache resulted from a highly productive year-long stay Calder spent in Aix-en-Provence where, parallel to his sculptural practice, he produced a series of important gouache works on paper. Motifs of the artist’s sculptural work appear in this gouache in more immediate 2-dimensional form as well as more representational. Here we see the three figures on the beach with a sun, rendered in Calder’s characteristic exuberant black line work, which gives way to spirals and bold stripes.

This work measure 29 x 42 in. (73.7 x 106.7 cm.)
Framed dimensions measure 37 x 50 in. (94 x 127 cm.)
