Lot Details

Alex Katz's "Ada with Orange Hat" (from Alex and Ada Portfolio) is one of the artist's most iconic and popular screenprints, illustrated by the fact that it was chosen as the cover image for the newest, definitive catalogue raisonne of his works on paper (Alex Katz Prints, Hatje Cantz, 1st Edition, 2010).

Another impression of this work was a featured work in the Alex Katz print retrospective at the Albertina Vienna and the Kunstalle Wurth in 2010 and 2011. Additionally, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston also called "Ada with Orange Hat" the centerpiece of its 2012 retrospective, a comprehensive exhibition celebrating the artist's 60-year career. As a result, the image in "Ada with Orange Hat" went on to be one of the most reproduced images from the entire exhibition.

Indeed, "Ada with Orange Hat" has made such an indelible impact on our popular culture that it is credited with being the inspiration for many fashionistas and hat designers!

The screenprint is hand signed and numbered in pencil from the edition of 150. This particular work has fine provenance as it was part of the private collection of art collector Winifred Bell, former art writer for the Berkshire Eagle in Massachusetts, who acquired it from the Loring Gallery in Sheffield, Mass. The work is in the original elegant wood frame, which bears the gallery's label verso.
