Lot Details

Artwork measures 23 x 12.6 inches (58.4 x 32 cm).

A standing figure seen in sharp profile, his hair blowing heroically in the wind and a bicycle raised high above his head, highlights this work's powerful combination of classical Greek features and contemporary imagery. Demonstrating a strong use of line and flattened perspective, “Homme à la bicyclette” exemplifies Fassianos's unique visual language.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential postwar Greek artists, Alecos Fassianos (b. 1935) is best known for his distinctive blend of Greek mythology and modernity. Fassianos studied painting under Yannis Moralis at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1956-1960. From 1960-1963, he continued his studies in lithography in Paris on a French state scholarship under Eugène Clairin and Georges Dayez. His paintings are characterized by dynamism and motion, drawing inspiration from mythology, Byzantine icons, and shadow theatre. His work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibitions worldwide, including Galerie Facchetti, Paris, France and Zurich, Switzerland (1969, 1971, and 1973); Iolas Zoumboulakis Gallery, Athens, Greece (1971, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1989, and 1992); Grafica Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (1980, 1982, and 1992); Greek National Gallery, Athens, Greece (2004); Galerie Di Meo, Paris, France (2008); and Grosvenor Gallery, London, England (2012). He lives and works in Athens and Paris.
