Lot Details

"Kinoc (Boy in Green)" (2011) a poignant oil and mixed media painting on wood panel by Contemporary African artist Aimé Mpané (Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1968). This painting measures 12.5 x 12 inches (31.8 x 30.5 cm) is unframed and in excellent condition. Depicting an intimate portrait of a young African boy wearing a brilliant orange shirt against a bright green background, these vivid Pop colors are in immediate contrast to the visceral nature in which the artist has left his face unpainted, carving his facial features from the natural texture and color of the wood panel itself. This work belongs to a larger series of intimate portraits by the artist that are are typically acquired in pairs or groups. The Brooklyn Museum recently acquired a large grouping of portraits from this series together.

Aimé Mpané was born 1968 and graduated in Sculpture from the Academie des Beaux-Arts, Kinshasa in 1990 and obtained advance degree at the Ecole National Superieure des Art Visuels de La Cambre, Brussels, Belgium in 2000.
