Lot Details

"IC Cont. (Woman in Orange and Turquoise)" (2012) is one of the most beautiful and quietly powerful of the iconic oil on carved wood portrait paintings by African artist Aimé Mpané Enkobo (1968). This painting measures 12.5 x 12 inches (31.8 x 30.5 cm) is unframed and in excellent condition. Depicting a dynamic portrait of a young African woman wearing a brilliant turquoise patterned scarf and dress against a vivid orange background, these bright Pop colors are in immediate contrast to the the visceral nature in which the artist has left her face unpainted, carving her facial features from the natural texture and color of the wood panel itself. This work belongs to a larger series of intimate portraits that are are typically acquired in pairs or groups. The Brooklyn Museum recently acquired a large grouping of portraits from this series together, for example.

Aimé Mpané was born 1968 and graduated in Sculpture from the Academie des Beaux-Arts, Kinshasa in 1990 and obtained advance degree at the Ecole National Superieure des Art Visuels de La Cambre, Brussels, Belgium in 2000.
