The present work – Man with Hat is an instantly recognizable work by the Scottish artist Adrian Wisznieski. The work is framed and in mint condition.
Adrian Wiszniewski was born in Glasgow in 1958 of Polish extraction. Between 1979 and 1983 he studied architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, and then painting at Glasgow School of Art. Wiszniewski held his first solo exhibitions in Glasgow and London a year after he graduated in 1984. Wiszniewski is known for his large-scale figurative paintings, which are dominated by self-parody, and a reflective tone. Often extemporized, they portray languid young men inhabiting a world of their own dreams. His imagery is personal and often obscure, as ideas and images connected freely in a multi-layer and often dreamlike way. In 1990 he introduced the clear colour and unbroken line to his paintings, demonstrating how the work of Matisse has been a major inspiration.
Wiszniewski is considered a leading figure in Scottish painting, and his work can be found in major public collections including M.O.M.A. New York, the Tate, London, the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh and Setegaya, Tokyo. He currently lives and works in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
