Lot Details

Concerned with the abstract manipulation of geometric shapes and patterns, Achille Perilli establishes a sense of vitality and emotion through the interplay of forms in his ambiguous spaces. In his earlier work, especially in his paintings on paper, Perilli concentrates more on line, creating two-dimensional spaces where active line drawings seem to move with, around, and in reaction to one another, forming dynamic shapes and figures. As demonstrated in this 1961 tempera on paper work, Perilli shows how expressive gestures can be induced by the intimate relationships of abstract lines.

With his cubist imagery and forays into geometric patterning, Achille Perilli (b.1927) established himself as a pioneer of abstract painting in Italy. After studying Giorgio De Chirico at the Faculty of Arts, Perilli went on to co-find the avant-garde group ‘Forma 1’ and helped compose its Manifesto. In 1977, he participated in the Cooperarte, a cooperative of artists with the common goal of establishing new and stronger relationships between art and the public. Today, Perilli continues to explore abstraction through bold colors and geometry. His work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions throughout the world, with recent solo shows at Galleria Paolo Verrengia, Salerno, Italy (2010); Walker Bischoff Galerie, Berlin, Germany (2009); Galleria Marchetti, Rome, Italy (2008); and the Italian Cultural Institute, New York, NY (2006). In 2012, he was featured in the ‘Materia dinamica’ group exhibition at the Galleria Biasutti & Biasutti Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Turin, Italy.
