Alberto Sughi at Palazzo Sant’Elia in Palermo
May 9-August 2, 2009

Sicily and the city of Palermo have organised a retrospective exhibition of works by Alberto Sughi, an emblematic figure and one of the major protagonists of Italian art from the post-war period to the present. The exhibition will be held in the recently renovated arts centre of Palazzo Sant'Elia, an eighteenth-century villa situated in the heart of this ancient city.

The exhibition, entitled Dove va l’uomo, consists of paintings and drawings from 1958 to the present, covering all the main periods in the long and intense career of the artist, who today has an essential place on the contemporary art scene and is recognized by leading historians and art critics all over the world. Alberto Sughi has managed to create his own original and unmistakable artistic style, and to give a rich contribution to the world of contemporary art, thanks to his ability to explore and exploit the inner workings of the human mind.

"To those who ask me for advice on how to interpret my work correctly, I would suggest trying to recreate the same patient and attentive state of mind that we have on entering a cinema when the film has already started; observing the first scenes of a plot that we are not yet familiar with; trying to understand something from the setting, or from the characters appearing on the screen without knowing whether they are the stars or minor characters in the story, and without even knowing whether the film has just started or is coming to an end" [SUGHI]
In short, the most ambiguous and mysterious moment, well suited to a sudden immersion in obscurity... Here, at least, the main theme is not that of loneliness, as always emphasised by the critics. The spectators are alone in the room, not communicating, but they are communicating through a vision that fills their eyes and minds. There is no story in Sughi's art, by which I mean no complex narrative line, but there is a kind of reflection, or echo, of a story. The story is far away, detached, somewhere between the scenes of a film or of life itself, and everyone is able to recreate it in his own interpretation or memory, in a dreamlike atmosphere, internalised, in a kind of self-absorption rather than a form of unhappiness.
[CALVESI]

The exhibition is curated by Maurizio Calvesi, under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy and the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Artistic Heritage, organized by the Province of Palermo, funded by the Region of Sicily and Palermo City Council together with the Bank of Sicily Foundation. The exhibition is part of an ample program of future exhibitions to be held at Palazzo Sant'Elia, all devoted to leading figures in twentieth century Italian art. Opening this cycle with an exhibition of Alberto Sughi’s work also aims to be an appropriate way of celebrating and paying special homage to the artist on his 80th birthday.
