Born in Havana, Cuba.
1962
Immigrated to the United States with his parents.
1977
Received a BA from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine.
1981
Received an MFA in Photography from the Yale University School of Art, New Haven, Connecticut.
1992
Received a Cintas Foundation Fellowship.
1993
Received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.
1994
New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.
1995
Artist-in-Residence, The Boston Athenaeum.
St. Botolph's Club Foundation Award.
1997
Artist-in-Residence, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, Massachusetts.
Received an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College.
2000
Acadia Summer Art Program/Kippy Camp, Bar Harbor, Maine.
Civitella Ranieri Foundation residence, Umbertide, Italy.
2004
Eelected to the Board of Overseers, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
2006
Received a Rappaport Prize from the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
2006-2007
Princeton University, Visting Professor in the Council of Humanities and Class of 1932 Fellow in the Visual Arts, Princeton, New Jersey.
2008
Presently works as a Professor of Art at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts.

Happy and Bob Doran Artist-in-Residence, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut.
Currently
Lives in Brookline, MA, with his wife Lisa McElaney, a filmmaker, and his children.
