Awarded the Edward L. Ryerson Travelling Fellowship from the Art Institute of Chicago.
 
1961
Received the Premio Lissone (Lissone Prize) in Milan, Italy.
 
1971
Received an Honorary Doctorate from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
 
1973
Recieved the Brandeis University Creative Arts Awards Citation in Painting.
 
1987
Received an Honorary Doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
 
1989
Received the Award for Painting by the French Ministry of Culture.
 
1991
Awarded Le Grand Prix des Arts (Peinture) of the City of Paris.
 
1994
Joan Mitchell Foundation established. The Foundation provides grants, stipends and scholarships for painters and sculptors. The Foundation also seeks out avenues to meet the needs of artists such as colloquiums and workshops, classes and other resource facilities.
 
2007
The Joan Mitchell Foundation has presented its 2006 grants to 25 painters and sculptors, who each receive $25,000.
