Herbert Ritts, Jr. born in Brentwood, California on August 13.
 
1970-1975
Attended Bard College to study economics and art history.
 
1978
Took the iconic photograph of Richard Gere which subsequently launched his career as a photographer.
 
1985
First gallery exhibition.
 
1988
First book published, "PICTURES", winner of AIGA Book Design Award.
 
1989
Directed Madonna's Music Video, "Cherish".
 
1990
Signed contract with Conde Nast Publications to shoot for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines.
 
1991
Received Infinity Award for Applied Photography from the International Center of Photography (ICP).
 
Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" and Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," both directed by Ritts win MTV Best Female Video and Best Male Video awards.
 
1991-1992
Directed Commercial campaigns including:
Calvin Klein Escape: "Water Ski," "Horse," "Pool," and "Sailboat"
Levi's Loose Fit Jeans: "Wind," "Earth," "Water," "Movement," "Light," "Wave," and "Fire"
Calvin Klein Jeans: "Marky Mark" with Mark Wahlberg and Kate Moss.

Charter Member, Board of Directors, Elton John Aids Foundation.
 
1996
Major retrospective at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, featuring 236 photographs.

Died December 26, at the UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles.
 
2005
AmFAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) honors Herb Ritts with posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award.
 
2007
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, dedication of The Herb Ritts Gallery, Museum's first space permanently dedicated to photography.
