Exhibition "Figuring Out Watercolor" Curated by Anne Ellegood, Peter Norton Collection, Los Angeles and New York |
||
continued from Page 1 Watercolor is alluring for its luminosity, tactility, and variability, and the wealth of recent works in watercolor and gouache offers an astonishing diversity of practice-in application, with loose, layered, washed-out images as well as tight, detailed, photo-realistic representations, and in subject matter, with straight portraits of living models, commentary on political affairs or historical events, and examinations of the body both formally and as the site of seduction or conflict, to name a few. This exhibition presents works in a range of styles and reflects varying painterly processes, yet all the pieces selected are figurative. Inspired by existing modes of visual and literary culture-from comic books to cartoons, fairy tales to allegories, snapshots to portraiture-these historical links can be seen throughout the exhibition. An awareness and indebtedness to earlier work can be witnessed in such juxtapositions as Seonna Hong's seductive yet child-like character adopting the pose of Alberto Vargas' 1950s pin-up girl, the near-mythological figures of Francesco Clemente and Katy Schimert, and the narrative structures of Henry Darger and John Bankston. Another important quality shared by these works is a sense of intimacy, encouraged by the material qualities of modestly sized watercolors on paper and the way that each work successfully taps into familiar shared histories or simply into the identifiable realities of our daily lives. |
