What constitutes a search on the iPhone?

The searches are counted the same way as on the artnet website.

    - All subscriptions to the artnet Price Database Fine Art and Design are limited in the number of searches, except the Imageless Annual, unlimited subscription. Please be aware that sale results are displayed 100 results per page. Once you have clicked on the orange "View first 100 results" button, it counts as a search unless you have zero results. Each time that you scroll to the next page of 100 results, this uses one search. Finally, if you use the "Back" button to return to the search screen, your search will not be saved, and coming back to it will count as a new search.

To get precise results, you may want to narrow your search on the search screen by using more search fields or using the "Advanced Search" option. You can also check the number of results on the search screen by hitting the grey button "Check number of results." If the number of results is over 100, you might want to narrow your search.

    - All subscriptions to the artnet Price Database Decorative Art are unlimited with images.

How do I perform a search?

Select "artnet Price Database" on the global landing page of the artnet iPhone App.

Choose the Price Database active subscription you want to use on "my account" page or go directly to the search screen by choosing the "search" tab on the bottom navigation of the Price Database section of the artnet iPhone App.

    - If you select the artnet Price Database Fine Art and Design search screen, you will only see the most popular search fields: "Artist," "Medium," "Title," "Size," "Sort By" and "Check number of results." To see all search fields, go to "Advanced Search" at the bottom of the search page. To complete a search in the Price Database Fine Art and Design you must select at least an artist's name on the first search screen or the name of an auction house on the advanced search screen.

Upon entering the third character in the artist, medium or auction house field, you will see a list of artists, media or auction houses that match the text you have entered. As you enter more characters, the list of suggestions will narrow. Once you have entered all known characters, you can scroll down the list and tap on the right artist, medium or auction house for which you were searching and proceed to the next search field.

    - If you select the artnet Price Database Decorative Art search screen, you will only see the most popular search options: "Collecting Category," "Object Type," "Title," "Size" and "Sort By." To complete a search, select at least one collecting category, object type or title. Upon entering the third character in the collecting category or object type fields, you will see a list of results matching the text you entered. As you enter more characters, the list of suggestions will narrow. Scroll down the list or tap on the right suggestion to select it. To see all search fields, go to "Advanced Search" at the bottom of the search page.

The best way in both price databases to perform a search is to enter the least amount of information possible, and then narrow the search down as needed.

If you do not find the search functionality you want on the first search screens, use the advanced search options. To have more information about the advanced search, go to questions 7 and 8: "How do I use the advanced search?"

How does the search form interpret empty fields?

The search form assumes you want to search all possible values for fields left blank. For example, if the only field filled in is "Auction House", then the search form will retrieve all auction lots for that auction house regardless of other criteria, such as "Sale Date" for when a sale occurred.

If you fill in only one of a pair of fields, such as in Price Range, the search will assume a minimum or maximum value for the empty field. For example, if you were to enter 2500 in Price "from" and nothing in Price "to," the search form would return matching works with a list price greater than or equal to $2,500.

Once I have my results, what does "BOUGHT IN" mean when it appears in the "sold for" field?

The price of some works is listed as "BOUGHT IN," which means they did not meet their reserve price (the minimum price to sell agreed upon by the seller and the auction house) and the work either did not sell or was sold to the auction house. If this occurs the price will not appear, instead "BOUGHT IN" will be displayed.

How do I sort search results?

On the results page, click "Sort: By Auction House" on the top right of the page to change the sorting order. The following options are available: sort by estimate, auction house, title or object type.

By hitting the grid view icon on the top right of the page, you can also change the lot display. The default view is the list of lots, but the grid view allows you to see many works at once.

What if I cannot find a particular work?

After hitting "View first 100 results," you will be presented with up to 100 lots of matching auction lots. If you are searching for a specific lot that does not appear among those listed, try refining your search by adding more criteria and then submitting the search again.

The artnet Price Database Fine Art and Design gives auction results dating back to 1985. The artnet Price Database Decorative Art includes a record for works that have come to auction dating back to 2000.
