If horror movies came in candy colors, youíd have "Pierre Bonnard: †The Late Interiors," Jan. 27-Apr. 19, 2009, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A bizarre claim, to be sure, but how else to explain the manís inimitably quavering brushstrokes? All those smudges and dabs canít be aimed at precision; rather, they seem to come from the agitated hand of a man actively persecuted by spirits. They are literally like henpecks, these brushstrokes. Bonnard is the Don Knotts of painters.
