The hype was relatively low-key for "Crash: Homage to JG Ballard" at
Gagosian Gallery, but it was a blockbuster all the same, mounted 40 years after Ballard’s kinky novel about car crashes as a sexual turn-on. Ballard caused a ruckus in 1970 not with his book but with an exhibition that preceded it, for which he put three junkyard cars at the
New Arts Laboratory.
