Lauren Fensterstock’s 2012 Black Mirror Diptych (detail) is composed of paper, wood and charcoal. “It’s a riff on the 19th-century technique of quill work,” said dealer Leslie Ferrin of the Ferrin Gallery in Pittsfield, Mass. The price is $14,500.

SOFA NY 2012

A REINVIGORATED FAIR

The 15th annual SOFA New York, Apr. 20-23, 2012 -- also known as the Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair -- opened last week at the Park Avenue Armory, charged up with a brilliant redesign by architect David Ling, a former associate with Richard Meier, I.M. Pei and Emilio Ambasz. Ling designed a narrow, tunnel-like entrance, sheathed in white, leading to an open courtyard space. Overhead he placed an array of rectilinear white lighting fixtures.

“We’re taking SOFA to a new level of commingling art and design,” promised SOFA founder Mark Lyman. SOFA NY boasts 50 dealers in its current New York manifestation, a compact number compared to the 70-plus booths in the ADAA Art Show. Admission is $25 -- and today is the final day of the fair.
