It’s being called Frieze Week NY, May 4-7, 2012, and the city’s art galleries are outdoing themselves with spring exhibitions that demand to be seen. Uptown alone offers Lucian Freud drawings at Acquavella, an Andre Masson survey at Blain di Donna, Frank Stella black and copper paintings at L&M Arts, Domenico Gnoli at Luxembourg & Dayan, and “Science on the back end,” a group show organized by artist Matthew Day Jackson at Hauser & Wirth.

While you’re uptown, don’t miss the beautiful Edouard Vuillard show at the Jewish Museum, which opens May 4, 2012, in addition to the new exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art devoted to Taryn Simon’s “A Living Man Declared Dead,” and contemporary art about letters, titled “Ecstatic Alphabets/Heaps of Letters.”Chelsea, too, has its share of important exhibitions, including new shows of the 69-year-old Italian epistemologist Pier Paolo Calzolari at Marianne Boesky and Pace (jointly) and photographer Cindy Sherman at Metro Pictures.

More to come.
