Convicted Rhode Island art dealer Rocco DeSimone, who was sentenced to 16 years a couple of weeks ago for a $6 million scam defrauding investors, is now claiming poverty in the hopes of avoiding the $2.2 million preliminary forfeiture order that’s expected. The Boston Globe reports that DeSimone is claiming that a 2006 Honda Element, $3,000 and a $1 Smith Barney stock are all he has left. He also says he owes the Internal Revenue Service $1.2 million and a former business partner $1.6 million.

The court has already set its sights on DeSimone’s John Singer Sargent drawing and a 1915 Renoir, and he already sold a Vernet painting, Napoleon on the Marengo, in 2007 to cover legal fees.
