RACHEL FEINSTEIN’S ROSES FOR CREATIVE TIMEMay 1, 2012
This year marks public-art nonprofit Creative Time’s 40th anniversary, and it’s celebrating with its annual benefit gala, “Dance ‘til You Drop,” at Roseland Ballroom, May 4, 2012. To commemorate the birthday, the organization has commissioned artist Rachel Feinstein to sculpt a five-by-five-inch silicon rose to symbolize everlasting love and the decades-long history of Creative Time, which has so far helped more than 2,000 artists produce 335 public projects.
Produced in an edition of 20, each lifelike pink Pocket Rose is on sale starting at $5,500, and, as of this posting, only eight are left. Feinstein has also sculpted three special-edition roses, each with a bronze cast finger in place of a stem, titled Goldfinger and priced at $12,000 apiece to start.
The evening kicks off with a 1930s-themed dinner, followed by a “dance-off” and a silent auction that includes donated works by Alice Aycock, John Baldessari, Byron Kim, Barbara Kruger, Anthony McCall, Walid Raad, Ed Ruscha, Shinique Smith, SUPERFLEX and Pae White.
Later in the night, DJ Sheik n Beik (aka Julio Santo Domingo) starts up the after party, which has a long list of co-hosts -- the Bruce High Quality Foundation, Kyle de Woody, Rashaad Newsome and Arden Wohl among them.
Tickets for the main event cost $1,500, $75 for the after party.
