New Scientist magazine recently published the winners from the Combustion Institute’s eighth-annual Combustion Art Competition Awards for artworks by pyrotechnic scientists. First prize went to NASA aerospace engineer Sandra Olson, whose photograph of what looks like a flaming star layers visible blue light overtop orange and yellow soot burns. The University of Kentucky’s Nelson Akafuah and Kozo Saito took home third place for their photograph of a helix-shaped column of fire, which they started by igniting the petrochemical benzene and then mirroring the image.
