MANICURES AT THE MUSEUMSept. 7, 2011
The New Museum is soliciting visitors to “get nailed” at its popup nail salon by Chicano “kustom kulture” artist Dzine (real name Carlos Rolon) in the museum's lobby window. Salon94 and The Standard Hotel are presenting the performance, in which a culturally diverse group of New York nail artists are painting unique designs on guests’ hands for free over three Saturdays.
No more appointments for custom nails are available, but you can still show up for the launch event on Sept. 8, 2011, and enter a raffle to win a one-hand manicure from Soho’s Valley Nails. Or, buy one of Dzine’s 40 limited-edition, 24kt gold-plated pinky nails at the museum’s store for $250 ($200 for pre-orders).
In the meantime, Dzine is also transforming Salon 94 Freemans into the “Imperial Nail Salon,” Sept. 7-Oct. 23, 2011, a high-gloss sculptural environment with a Swarovski-crystal chandelier, jewel-encrusted paintings, a low-rider-worthy sound system, gold-leafed furniture and a part-time manicurist.
