ELIZABETH STREB REHEARSALS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Aug. 18, 2011

Conceptual choreographer Elizabeth Streb is opening up her Williamsburg studio to the public for free viewings of rehearsals for the company’s major upcoming event, “KISS THE AIR!” which debuts at the Park Avenue Armory, Dec. 14-22, 2011.

Streb is famous for testing her performers’ bodily limits and her new works are no less daring. In HUMAN FOUNTAIN, two dozen dancers jump off of a 30-foot, honeycomb-shaped structure in “cascades of airborne liquid muscle” to mimic the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. For ASCENSION, Streb subjects her performers to the Sisyphean pursuit of climbing a spinning ladder in which they can’t tell if they’re going up or down. Another work, the aptly titled AIR HURL, involves sending them flying past one another on ramps designed for film stunts. Meanwhile, the performance space is filled with video projections and the audience is encouraged to interact with the work and move around the space freely.

The full rehearsal schedule is available on Streb’s website, which explains that “STREB believes that the cross section of activity in our space feeds the creativity. Bring lunch and use our WiFi!”
