CHELSEA GALLERY CHANNELS SKATE SHOP

July 19, 2011

The latest exhibition at I-20 Gallery is billing itself as a “throwback to the days when art took precedence over branding.” Nevertheless, its latest show, the skater-themed “Make Skateboards,” is transforming the gallery into a fully functional retail store. On sale at the pop-up shop, July 21-Sept. 17, 2011, are artist-designed decks, clothing, furniture and accessories.

Since I-20 is located a few blocks from the Pier 62 skate park in Chelsea, the exhibition should attract skaters as well as typical gallery-goers. A roster of weekly parties, book-signings, album launches and "secret band nights" are promised throughout August, when most Chelsea galleries are closed.

Artists include Erik Parker, Slater Bradley, Jacob Kassay, Kenny Scharf, Robert Lazzarini, Carlton DeWoody, Orly Genger, Tony Bones, Ivory Serra and Shelter Serra (Richard’s nephews) and Peter Saul.
