BERLIN GALLERY WEEKEND 2012Apr. 27, 2012
Berlin lost its own art fair when Art Forum Berlin closed up shop in 2011, but it has something that is proving to be even more popular: Gallery Weekend Berlin, Apr. 27-29, 2012, when the locals take to their bicycles, and their Mercedes, for a open house tour of galleries across the city. The ninth installment of the event boasts 51 participants, including some younger galleries like Circus, Chert and Supportico Lopez, as well as a virtual fair online.
In some ways the event proves that Berlin is an international trading center, exhibiting top-of-the-market artists from out of town. Among the many imports are Richard Long at Konrad Fischer, Francois Morellet at Kunsthandel Wolfgang Werner, Jenny Holzer and Anthony McCall at Sprüth Magers, Matt Mullican at Klosterfelde, Lari Pittman at Gerhardsen Gerner, and Julian Schnabel at Contemporary Fine Arts.
From Eastern Europe is the Czech conceptual artist Katerina Sedá at Arratia Beer, and Joanna Rajkowska, one of Poland's most important young artists, is at Zak Branicka, where she is exhibiting the second part of her video Born in Berlin. Also on view are Katharina Grosse at Johann König (for the first time) and the neo-romanticist Friedrich Kunath at BQ.
