BASQUIAT’S OLD BAND REUNITES AT NEW MUSEUMJuly 19, 2011
Performance artist Michael Holman is reviving Gray, his industrial noise band formed in 1981 with Jean-Michel Basquiat, and later Vincent Gallo, Shannon Dawson, Wayne Clifford and Nick Taylor. The shows, at 7pm and 9pm, July 21, 2011, are part of the New Museum’s “Get Weird” event series. It’s the first Gray performance since reforming for a scene in Julian Schnabel’s film Basquiat in 1996. Before that, the group played at Basquiat’s memorial service in 1988.
Now comprised of Holman and Taylor, the band released an album last year -- its first ever -- called Shades Of... It mixes samples of the group’s early recordings with new sounds that run the gamut from “Stockhausen-inspired fugues to churning dubstep workouts.”
