ART WALKS IN CHELSEA, CHICAGOJuly 25, 2011
Last year’s debut 25-gallery Chelsea Art Walk has quadrupled in size for 2011, adding another 100 galleries to this year’s free early-evening event, which is slated to take place on July 28, 2011, 5-8 pm. Participating galleries stay open late, and some host live performances, screenings, artist and curator talks.
Among the special events: listen to shoegaze rockers Autodrone at Monya Rowe gallery, have a Polaroid portrait shot at Porter/Contemporary, taste a new Buckminster Fuller-inspired ice cream sandwich at Meulensteen, play ping-pong at Nicholas Robinson Gallery, and watch a gallery talk with curator Erin Brown at Margaret Thatcher Projects. Take a map for the full list of participating venues or download the free iTunes app The Exhibitionist.
Gallery nights like these are catching on. Perhaps thanks to the success of the seven-year-old Gallery Weekend Berlin -- which has supplanted Berlin’s hometown art fair -- 2011 also sees the inauguration of Gallery Weekend Chicago, Sept. 16-18, 2011. Visitors can attend dinners with curators and artists, take a private closing tour with Pritzker director Madeleine Grynsztejn of the “Mark Bradford” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art and go on chauffeured visits to galleries such as Corbett v. Dempsey, Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Donald Young Gallery, Kavi Gupta Gallery and Threewalls.
