Art Basel -- otherwise known as the international art-fair conglomerate Messe Schweiz, or MCH Swiss Exhibition (Basel) Ltd.) -- has agreed to buy a majority ownership stake in Art HK, the three-year-old Hong Kong International Art Fair founded in 2008 by Tim Etchells. “We have every interest in a strong presence in Asia,” said MCH CEO René Kamm. More than 260 galleries exhibit at Art HK, ranging from Acquavella and Arndt to White Cube and ZieherSmith.

The first order of business has been to change the date of next year’s fair, moving it from May to Sept. 2-5, 2012, in order to fit into the calendar that includes Art Basel in June and Art Basel Miami Beach in December. For now, Art HK retains its name -- though that is expected to change in the future, as the fair is “integrated into the Art Basel brand” -- and its director, Magnus Renfrew.
