The celebrated Dutch painter Karel Appel, a pioneering expressionist artist in postwar Europe, died in Zürich at age 85 on May 3, 2006. A memorial was held for him at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on Sept. 23, from which the following remarks are taken.
