impressionists & moderns

LIVE FROM LONDON: Christie's parade was
rained out on the evening of Dec. 2, 1996,
in a lackluster performance at the
Impressionist and modern sale that brought
back shadows of the dark times.
There is no regulation in London that
requires the auctioneer to announce passed
lots at the time of sale, but the subtle
quaver in auctioneer Christopher Burge's
baritone was equally compelling and all too
frequent.
Very little seemed to go his way. The large
Degas pastel Danseuses vertes that graced
the catalogue's cover was hammered down at
£2 million. It was below the projected
estimate of £2.5 million - £3.5 million, but
still the highest price of the evening.
A very pretty 1914 Severini brought £1.7
million, probably a record for the painter,
and the one note of joy in a bleak
undertaking.
The total volume for the evening was £11.5
million. Of the 59 lots entered, 22 were
passed--at least as determined by the
"quaver test."
70 percent (41 lots) did not exceed the low
estimate. 16 percent (10 lots) exceeded the
low but not the high estimate. 14 percent
(9 lots) exceeded the high. Plainly, prices
will have to come down to match the
expectations of the buyers.
