A silver bowl
The silver two-handled bowl by Cornelius Vander Burgh, ca. 1685, goes on sale at Christie's, Jan. 19. Lot 353 is estimated at $150,000-$250,000. Sure, the estimate is steep. But there are only 20 such New York bowls, period. This one is distinguished by its size -- it's the largest in existence. Plus, it's only the second bowl by the New York silversmith Vander Burgh to come under the hammer. Already, there are a considerable number of bids. "The bowl will reach a very high price," says Laura Verlaque, Christie's silver expert.
