Yang Shoujing [Yang Shou-ching; zi Xingwu; hao Linsu Laoren]

(b Yidu, Hubei Province, 1839; d 9 Jan 1915). Chinese calligrapher, epigraphist, geographer and bibliophile. The son of a wealthy merchant, he failed the local civil service examinations because of his inferior calligraphy. He then studied with Pan Cun (d 1892), who introduced him to epigraphy, the study of inscriptions on ancient objects such as bronzes and stelae. These were the models used by calligraphers of the stele studies movement (beixue), which was the prevalent style of the late Qing period (1644–1911). Yang received his juren degree, the second stage in the civil service, in 1862 but never succeeded in passing the national examinations.
