Withoos [Calzetti; Galzetta Bianca], Matthias [Matteo]
(b Amersfoort, 1627; d Hoorn, 1703). Dutch painter, active also in Italy. He was the pupil of Jacob van Campen and Otto Marseus van Schrieck. In 1648 Withoos went to Italy with van Schrieck and Willem van Aelst. He became a member of the Schildersbent in Rome. While in Italy his patrons included Cardinal Leopoldo de Medici. By 1653 Withoos had returned to Amersfoort, but, when the French occupied the town in 1672, he moved to Hoorn.
