Wallis, Thomas

(b London, 22 June 1873; d London, 4 May 1953). English architect. He was articled to Sydney R. J. Smith (1858–1913). In 1908 Wallis set up in partnership with J. A. Bowden (1876–1949), built extensions (1908) to the Town Hall in Stoke-on-Trent and entered competitions (e.g. Marylebone Town Hall, 1911, and Port of London Authority, 1913). In 1914 he formed a new practice, Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, with the American architect Gilbert, following an approach by the American engineering company Kahncrete to promote use of reinforced concrete industrial structures. Although Gilbert never became involved in the firm, his name was retained. The actual partners included Wallis’s son, Douglas T. Wallis (1901–68). Henceforth, Wallis specialized in industrial buildings in concrete characterized by a decorative architectural façade concealing the utilitarian shop floor and giving visual identity towards the road.
