Vorsterman.

Dutch family of artists, active in Flanders. They came from Zaltbommel, Gelderland, but their exact relationship is difficult to establish. (1) Lucas Vorsterman (i) was one of the finest engravers of the work of Rubens, although his career with the latter ended early and with great acrimony. His son (2) Lucas Vorsterman (ii) was also an engraver but lacked his father’s talent. The painter Otto Vorsterman (married 1632) may have been a relative, for Lucas Vorsterman the elder engraved his painting of a Youth Playing a Flute (Hymans, no. 132). It is possible that Otto Vorsterman was the father of JAN VORSTERMAN, whose career as a landscape and topographical painter took him to France and England.
