(5) Hans Vischer
(b Nuremberg, c. 1489; d Leipzig, 8 Sept 1550). Sculptor, draughtsman and brass-caster, son of (2) Peter Vischer (i). He assumed the direction of the family workshop in 1529 following the deaths of Peter (ii) and Peter (i). He is credited with several works in a rather vapid Renaissance style, such as the two epitaphs of 1521 of Henning Goden (Erfurt Cathedral; Wittenberg, Schlosskirche). The double tomb of Electors Joachim I and John Cicero (1530; Berlin Cathedral), however, is a particularly imposing work, featuring a formidable frontal effigy of John Cicero on the upper level of this two-tiered ensemble. In 1534 Hans was responsible for the cast of the figure of St Wenceslas, its supporting base, canopy and candlestick in Prague Cathedral. The wood model for the statue of St Wenceslas (Nuremberg, Ger. Nmus.) was probably by Hans Peisser. About 1534 Hans Vischer also provided the screen and candelabra for the Sigismund Chapel in Wawel Cathedral, Kraków, and completed the wall tomb of Elector John (Wittenberg, Schlosskirche); in the latter Hans emulated the more powerful tomb relief of Elector Frederick III cast by his brother for the same church.
