(3) Jan Baptist Verberckt I
(b Antwerp, 5 April 1735; d Antwerp, 9 March 1819). Silversmith, son of (2) Michiel Verberckt. He was an apprentice in his fathers workshop, while at the same time taking lessons in modelling (17514) from the sculptor Cornelis dHeur at the Academie. One of his earliest works is a signed chased silver font. From 1756 to 1761 he worked in the workshop of his uncle (1) Jacques Verberckt in Paris. He returned to Antwerp in 1761 and became a journeyman in his fathers workshop but engraved his own signature on some objects. From 1762 to 1767 he attended lessons in drawing and sculpture at the Academie. In 1767 he became professor of modelling in plaster at the Academie and in 1771 a master silversmith.
